Granta Magazine Celebrates Young Spanish-Language Authors at Miami Book Fair

Miami is a big event town. And there’s no doubt, the Miami Book Fair International is a big event. So you can expect a big turnout this weekend. And that’s cool (the world could stand to pick up a couple million readers). Still, if you’re looking for some events within the fair that will separate the bibliophiles, especially those looking for Latino authors, from those looking for only the celebrity authors, then you might want to check out the Granta Magazine’s Best of Young Spanish-Language Novelists panel on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Already famous for highlighting talented young British and American authors in past volumes – including such authors as Salman Rushdie pre-Fatwa–Granta has shifted its focus to Spanish-Language writers. And what better place to talk about those authors than in the center of the Spanish-language universe-Miami.

The latest edition of Granta–the literary version of a periodical

that was originally born at Cambridge University in 1889–caught on to

the trend that the whole world has been noticing lately. Namely, that

Latinos are taking over the world (can I get a que que!). Accordingly,

the magazine came out with a list of 22 Spanish-language authors born

after January 1, 1975 (in other words 35 years or younger) it thinks are

going to rock your mundo. The edition has already been published in

Spanish, but the English version will be coming out November 25.

Pola Oloixarac from Argentina, Carlos Yushimito from Peru, are on the

list of 22 and will be at the event along with panelist who helped come

up with the list for Granta. The list made up of mostly Argentine and

Spanish writers, with authors from Mexico, Bolivia, Chile, Uruguay and

Peru mixed in.

The rest of the authors featured in Granta are: Andres Barba (Spain),

Oliverio Coelho (Argentina), Andres Ressia Colino (Uruguay), Federico

Falco (Argentina), Pablo Gutierrez (Spain), Rodrigo Hasbun (Bolivia),

Sonia Hernandez (Spain), Carlos Labbe (Chile), Javier Montes (Spain),

Elvira Navarro (Spain), Matias Nespolo (Argentina), Andres Neuman

(Argentina), Alberto Olmos (Spain), Antonio Ortuno (Mexico), Patricio

Pron (Argentina), Lucia Puenzo (Argentina), Santiago Roncagliolo (Peru)

Andres Felipe Solano (Colombia), Samantha Schweblin (Argentina),

Alejandro Zambra (Chile).

Even before the book fair event, there will be a Granta 113 release

party at Gemma Lounge (529 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach) tonight at 8 p.m.
