Independent Journalism in Miami Needs You

We need to raise $10,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.

$10,000

Ten years ago, Alison Burgos and NYC’s Shescape gathered 800-plus gal pals from around South Florida for a one-night dance party benefiting breast cancer. The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender event was such a huge success — raising $15,000 — that, year after year, the get-together grew, eventually becoming Aqua Girl, the country’s biggest all-female charity fest. Now, this Saturday, Aqua Beach Pool Party at the Surfcomber Resort will bring the 2009 edition to a sun-soaked, seaside climax.

Beginning at 11 a.m., the all-day bikini blowout will kick off with sipping and socializing beside the pool. Then, as the crowd explodes, 2,000 alternately wet and sweaty women will down cocktails and dance dirty to the sounds of DJs Pride and Pat Pat. Plus, adding to the party fire, there’ll be sexy go-go dancers. So score $18 tickets in advance, or be extra-generous and pay $25 at the door. Either way, the cash goes to a good cause: the nonprofit Aqua Foundation for Women.
