Size matters when it comes to certain appendages — such as fruits on trees. And, as it turns out, the world’s largest tree-borne fruit has roots in Miami’s backyard, put there by horticulturist extraordinaire David Fairchild.

Fairchild, of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, brought the spiky, green-skinned jackfruit from Sri Lanka many moons ago, and it’s since become an integral part of the garden’s horticultural efforts. If you’re unfamiliar with this unique bloom, the Jackfruit Jubilee is your chance to get acquainted.

With a taste that’s been compared to banana, pineapple, and Juicy Fruit gum, jackfruit is fiber-rich; an excellent source of vitamin C, potassium, calcium, and antioxidants; and works well in a variety of dishes.
This fruity fest will teach attendees about the unusual fruit — how to grow it, cook it, eat it, and appreciate it. There’ll be lectures, gardening demos, tastings, trees for sale, and plenty of other jackfruit fodder. Because bigger is better.

The Jackfruit Jubilee runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at 10901 Old Cutler Rd. in Coral Gables. Admission costs $25 for adults, $18 for seniors 65 and older, and $12 for children ages 6 to 17; Fairchild members and children 5 and younger get in free. Eco discounts are available for those who walk, bike, or take public transportation. Visit fairchildgarden.org or call 305-667-1651.

Sat., Sept. 13, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., 2014
