In the sky! Is that a superhuman alien from planet Krypton? Could it be a bird? No, it’s just a plane. But, hey, flying things can be very exciting, which is why South Florida Air Expo exists to both educate and titillate you. Also referred to as Operation SAFEE Flight (OSF), the expo is in its third year and encourages Miamians to get to know aviation on a more intimate level (beyond those random pat-downs at the airport).
There will be Coast Guard Air Rescue demonstrations, airplane simulators and modelers, and many more things that will make aviation lovers geek out. The goal of the event is to “introduce as many kids, young adults, and members of our community to the huge impact that aviation has in Miami.” Curious about what that impact might be? You’ll have to attend OSF to find out. The expo opens this Friday for student field trips and Saturday for the general public. Crowds are welcome either day, and admission is free. Prepare for takeoff at 9 a.m. at the Orion Jet Center at Opa-locka Executive Airport (14850 NW 44th Ct., Opa-locka). Visit sflairexpo.com.
