Think before you snub classical music. Researchers tracked a group of dementia patients, and as their gray matter went limp, their musical tastes plummeted from Beethoven to Beiber. Beyond IQ calisthenics, there’s another reason to head to the symphony this week: the New World Symphony’s Opening Concert at its new $200 million Frank Gehry-designed campus this Wednesday. The new space boasts an igloo-esque concert hall that seats 750 in the round, with movable platforms and overlapping acoustic panels that double as projection screens. The new campus will likely draw both aging classical-music lovers and whippersnappers enamored with cutting edge video art.
Michael Tilson Thomas will conduct for the first time in these new digs with a program featuring Wagner’s “Overture to the Flying Dutchman,” Thomas Adés (paired with video art by filmmaker Tal Rosner), and Aaron Coplands’s “Symphony No. 3.” The $100 tickets sold out months ago, but the 7:30 p.m. program will be projected on an exterior wall the following Friday, January 28.
