There are only about 37 cities around the world where outdoor tennis is an option in the middle of fall; it’s far too cold everywhere else.
But there’s only one town where it’s acceptable to play said sport on a bright-white surface outlined by blood-red boundary lines and surrounded by an ocean of blue asphalt: Key Biscayne.
When six of the most recognizable names in professional tennis get together for the inaugural Miami Tennis Cup at Crandon Park Tennis Center (7300 Crandon Blvd., Key Biscayne) this Friday through Sunday, they’ll be the first to play on a red, white, and blue surface.
“We are honored to have not only some of the most iconic tennis professionals competing but some of the most legendary individuals from the world of sport,” says Julian Wortelboer, president and CEO of tournament organizer Group NOS. “With our introduction of the first-ever stadium court in white, our signature colors will make the spectator experience unlike any other and establish Miami Tennis Cup as a must-see event each year on the world tennis calendar.”
Olympic gold medalist Andy Murray will headline the “double-elimination, round-robin tournament” alongside hometown favorite Andy Roddick. Juan Carlos Ferrero, John Isner, Alejandro Falla, and Nicolás Almagro round out field.
