A woman desiring, pursuing, and having enjoyable sex with multiple men is just another Sex and the City rerun in today’s world. But back in the day, that was enough to get all kinds of straitlaced, prudish types freaking out. They couldn’t, for example, handle Jeanne Moreau frolicking through the French countryside being all nonchalant and extra-attractive while choosing between a bland husband, a polo-playing side lover, and a dashing younger man in the 1958 French flick The Lovers (Les Amants).
When an Ohio theater manager showed the film, America got its panties in a bunch, and the man was hit with an obscenity lawsuit that made its way to the Supreme Court and resulted in Justice Potter Stewart’s famous line about pornography: “I know it when I see it.” (Translation: You can have sex with two European hotties to the tune of violin music but not with Ron Jeremy to cheesy synth.)
