If you’re so over being disappointed by the Marlins, shelling out beaucoup bucks for Heat tickets, and feeling meh about the Dolphins, maybe it’s time to embrace a new athletic endeavor.
Miami is on board with of a brand-spankin’-new sport known as “strategic team athletics racing” (AKA “grid”). And lucky us — we’re one of only eight cities in the National Pro Grid League (NPGL).

Meet your Miami Surge.

Basically, musclebound men and women go six-pack to six-pack in lifting, strength, speed, and agility competitions. There are five men and five women per team, and at least one of each is older than 40.
The inaugural match pits our hometown Surge against the New York Rhinos in 11 strategic races on a basketball-size court. Teams must work together to beat the grid by engaging in weight-lifting and body-weight challenges (think gymnastics moves and heavy-weighted maneuvers).

Get on board as a supporter now and you’ll have OG fan bragging rights when the Surge hits the big time.
The match kicks off Saturday at 7 p.m. at the BankUnited Center (1245 Dauer Dr., Coral Gables). Tickets cost $19 to $104. Visit tickets.miamisurge.com or call 305-284-8686.

Sat., Aug. 30, 7 p.m., 2014
