Multiculti Miami is so full of flags it can be difficult to get everyone to rally around one.
But whether we claim Old Glory, rainbow pride, the white-hot Heat pennant, or the numerous colors of the globe representing our citizenry, few flags fly across allegiances like a banner representing the environment. That’s why when it comes to protecting South Florida’s most beloved natural resource, everyone is proud to wave green for the Everglades.
Beginning Friday at 7 p.m., you can link up with the “Love the Everglades Movement” at Wynwood’s Artopia Arts Center (1753 NE Second Ave., Miami), where the grassroots outfit hopes to raise awareness concerning the preservation of our treasured national park and its fragile ecosystem.
“This movement is an outgrowth of a series of excursions that we’ve been organizing to help facilitate people’s relationships with the natural environment,” explains Houston Cypress, a Miccosukee activist behind the conservation efforts.
“Once you get people out there, they fall in love with the place, and their hearts are called to action when they find out just how much remains to be done out there. The destruction is affecting the land, the animals, the water that is so fundamental to it all, and it’s affecting a Miccosukee way of life. People care, and their hearts are moved.”
Artopia hopes to rally support for the cause through a silent art auction and an exhibit of nature-inspired paintings, photos, and music videos. Organizers are capping the shindig with a roof-raising courtesy of DJ Erick Paredes, who’ll crank up the love for the River of Grass and get those green flags flying. Admission is free. Call 305-374-8882 or visit artopiamiami.com.
