You won’t need to drop hallucinogens or strap yourself into an isolation chamber to get into the spirit of this trippy show exploring the uncharted regions of the brain. “Altered States,” opening tonight at 7:30 at Diana Lowenstein Fine Arts, buzzes with the sense of the distorted imagery and dizzy perspectives that rattle the cage. The show promises to dose spectators with photography, video and digital installations, paintings, and sculptures by a group of artists tinkering with mind-fucking games. “Aesthetically the works appear like one might experience them in an altered state,” curator José Carlos Diaz says. “Some of the images are of a taxi in New York with streaks of street lights [as] if someone had taken a drunken ride. Other photos show an artist going stir-crazy in a room.”
On view in the Project Room is Manny Prieres’s We Will Faulter, featuring striking works on paper that, according to the artist, combine the “elite and the adorned slumming with the uncultivated and crude.” On exhibit through December 2. Call 305-576-1804, or visit www.dlfinearts.com.
