What does Rachel Maddow know about war? Plenty. The radio and TV host was born to a former U.S. Air Force captain, for starters. Maddow, a lesbian, also grew up in a conservative Catholic community in California, so she knows a little something about the internal war between fitting in and self-acceptance that many closeted kids face.
But mostly, Rachel Maddow knows about war because she’s written a book about it. In Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power, Maddow makes the case that America’s shifting ideals have landed the country in a state of perpetual war — and that because of that circumstance, the country stands to lose power, economic gains, and international respect.
Maddow takes that argument to the stage at the University of Miami’s Field House (1245 Dauer Dr., Coral Gables) this Sunday in a discussion with UM president Donna Shalala.
