Many have tried, but failed, to pin down the work of artist William Dunlap. It encompasses every medium, from painting and sculpture to constructions and mixed-media installations, featuring images of animals, flowers, and objects in pastoral landscapes. Consequently, art reviewers “dunno” how best to classify his work, which he defines as “hypothetical realism”: “places and situations [that] don’t exist; but they could,” says Dunlap. You’ll get your chance to try labeling his vision today when he appears at Books & Books. This evening at 6:00, the artist will be on hand to sign copies of his new book, Dunlap, which features more than 100 full-color reproductions of his artwork, spanning three decades.
Dunlap’s pieces are exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and in American embassies throughout the world. Dunlap keeps a Coral Gables studio, and although he’s from Mississippi, he considers himself a Florida artist.
