In a disconnected and often angry world, the spirit of togetherness is something we could all use a little more of. That’s the energy behind Africa Umoja: 20 Years of Freedom and Democracy Tour, a spectacular song and dance extravaganza celebrating South African culture.
Created by Todd Twala and Thembi Nyandeni to help the youth of South Africa remember their roots, the award-winning show has been seen worldwide in more than 50 countries and countless cities. Next up: Miami. During the tour’s run, the cast will host a free community drum and dance workshop at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center.
Anyone and everyone can learn about the traditional song and dance that celebrates South Africa’s indigenous heritage. In addition to schooling attendees on the musical magic, there’ll be a Q&A where anyone can ask questions about the country and its history, 20 years post-apartheid.
The workshop begins at 11 a.m. Friday at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, 6161 NW 22nd Ave., Miami. Admission is free, but a ticket is required. Call 305-638-6771 or visit ahcacmiami.org.
