To the Detroit Pistons, the Miami Heat must seem like the embodiment of everything that has gone wrong in their history. The beef goes back ten years ago to the 2003 NBA draft, one of the best of all time. The Pistons had landed the number two pick from the Memphis Grizzlies even though that same year they had made it to the Eastern Conference Finals. Among current Heat superstars LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade (plus New York’s Carmelo Anthony), the Pistons selected NBA megaflop Darko Milicic. While the Pistons went on to win the NBA Championship in 2004, their players aged, and shortly thereafter the team faded into basketball obscurity because they’re missing a young star player.
This year, the Pistons tried their best to pull their roster together, signing or trading for a team that’s made up of Heat pests. Brandon Jennings, Milwaukee’s former point guard, and Josh Smith, formerly of the Atlanta Hawks, joined a talented young team to compete against the two-time defending NBA champs. The two face each other this Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the American Airlines Arena (701 Biscayne Blvd., Miami).
