Do You Voodoo?

Voodoo: It’s one of the Caribbean’s most secretive and misunderstood religions. But photographer Cristina García Rodero is out to change that with a stunning solo show that lifts the veil on the occult rituals of Haitian voodoo.
On view at Miami Dade College’s Museum of Art + Design, “Rituales en Haití” marks the first major U.S. solo museum exhibition by the celebrated Magnum Photo artist.
“Rituales en Haití” features a series of 160 of the Spanish photographer’s works, which debuted at the 2001 Venice Biennale. To capture her haunting pictures, García Rodero traveled to Haiti on several occasions over a period of four years, documenting voodoo rituals during her visits. She later produced a series of arresting portraits and evocative scenes complemented by her engaging personal observations.
García Rodero’s groundbreaking work extends beyond the powerful and magical ceremonies of Haiti to focus on festivals — religious or pagan — throughout Spain, India, Mediterranean Europe, and the United States. Her engaging series of expansive photographic essays convey the complexities of the human subconscious and the enduring influence of faith on humanity.
