Professional sports have given us the Fighting Irish, the Washington Redskins, and the Minnesota Vikings. Conspicuously absent from the roster are teams with such as the Jumping Jews and the Vicious Israelites. The Jewish culture, as a whole, is not known for producing kingpin athletes (excluding, of course, Greenberg, Koufax, and Green). Eh, such is life. The title of the Chosen is a nice consolation prize.
At the upcoming XXVII Annual Maccabi Games, 1,600 Latin-Jewish athletes will converge upon Miami Beach. Representing immigrants from 10 nations throughout Latin America, these athletes will join forces to break records and blow stereotypes. Marriages have even resulted from the games — giving hope to any Nana whose granddaughter has ever fancied gentile men. See the action beginning at 7 p.m. Opening ceremonies will take place at the Sanford L. Ziff Campus.

Will you step up to support New Times this year?
At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $17,800 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
