Week after week, the Miami Hurricanes are forcing the critics to ask the same question: “Is the U back?” The answer: Not yet, but they might be on their way. The team finally ranked in the Associated Press Top 10 for the first time since 2009. Considering that Miami is one of the most decorated college football teams in the history of the sport, that’s saying a lot. While a lot of credit has to be given to QB Stephen Morris and potential Heisman nominee RB Duke Johnson, the surprising strength of this year’s Canes has been their defense. This Saturday, they’ll face the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest. It’s easy to dismiss the 3-3 team, but there’s a very particular challenge to this week’s meeting at Sun Life Stadium (2269 NW 199th St., Miami Gardens). Next week, the Hurricanes will face their biggest challenge of the year against perennial rival Florida State University and might easily overlook the task at hand of beating Wake Forest. Can the Canes prove their rank and keep fighting their way into a land of swag and possible national championship hopes?
