It’s time to call it quits, ’90s pop band the Proclaimers. You towheaded twin Scot rockers had your heyday with “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles),” pounding its simplistic chords against a black backdrop as scenes from the Johnny Depp vehicle Benny & Joon flashed by. But that was two decades ago; now you’re 51 years old and still milking that one hit for all it’s worth.
Plus, you’ve been one-upped by Amy Herzog, a playwright in her prime. Five hundred miles is so 1993; the new number to beat is 4,000, as in 4,000 Miles, Herzog’s play coming to GableStage (1200 Anastasia Ave., Coral Gables) this Saturday.
The show tells the story of Leo, a 21-year-old hippie who lost his best friend on a cross-country biking adventure. He crashes at his grandmother’s West Village apartment while he deals with his loss. The New York Times called it “funny,” “moving,” and “altogether wonderful” — none of which has been used to describe the Proclaimers in at least 15 years.
