Sesame Street couldn’t handle mixing kids’ programming with Katy Perry cleavage, but Yo Gabba Gabba! gets it right every time. Perhaps it’s because one of the show’s creators, Christian Jacobs, is MC Bat Commander of Cali synth-pop band the Aquabats. After becoming a father, he and a friend created Gabba, which began to go viral even as TV execs rejected it. The producer of Napoleon Dynamite spotted it and showed it to a Nickelodeon bigwig, and the rest is pop-culture/kid-show history. Host DJ Lance Rock and characters Muno, Foofa, Brobee, Toodee, and Plex are irresistible in their own right. But add guest stars who seem straight off a SXSW lineup, and the show becomes eye and ear candy for everyone ages 1 to 37. Past episodes featured Of Montreal, the Ting Tings, and South Florida’s the Postmarks, and the upcoming season promises segments with Devo and Weezer. This Sunday, Yo Gabba Gabba! Live!: There’s a Party in My City! will stop at the American Airlines Arena with DJ Lance Rock and friends, as well as Biz Markie, who will slobber through another Biz Beat of the Day. Showtimes are 12:30 and 4:30 p.m., but come early to enjoy the Yo Gabba Gabba Halloween Spooktacular! at the arena’s East Plaza.
