$10,000

For Robert Battle, artistic director designate of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (he takes the reins in July), Miami isn’t just another stop on the company’s 24-city national tour. It’s home. Born in Florida, Battle began studying dance in high school at New World School of the Arts, where he recently spoke at a retirement party for Daniel Lewis, the school’s founding dean of dance. Battle returns with the Ailey company for two programs honoring the 50th anniversary of Mr. Ailey’s masterwork “Revelations,” which will be presented at Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House on Thursday at 8 p.m.
Other works include Battle’s “The Hunt” and “Love Stories,” drawing on African-American social dances and exploring notions of past, present, and future. Artistic Director Judith Jamison, hip-hop hero Rennie Harris, and Battle created the three distinct sections to tunes by Stevie Wonder.

Feb. 17-18, 8 p.m.; Sat., Feb. 19, 2 & 8 p.m.; Sun., Feb. 20, 2 p.m., 2011
