Dachshunds: To most people, they’re just a funny-shaped canine, but to their owners, they’re a source of unbridled excitement that deserves annual celebration. And that’s exactly what dach lovers will do this weekend at the South Beach Dachshund Winterfest.
This isn’t just any old doggie parade. You haven’t lived until you’ve indulged in the unadulterated pleasure of dachshund fortunetelling, proceeded through the Doxie Funhouse, or participated in a group sing-along of “The Dach Song.”
The first Dachshund Winterfest in 2003 featured a mere 30 pioneering wiener dogs. Now, hundreds of these haute dogs and their owners waddle to Lummus Park (Ocean Drive, between 11th and 12th streets in Miami Beach) to celebrate the “stretch limo of the canine world.” In years past, the event highlight was a costume contest, but the headline grabber this year will be a talent show, in which pups will compete in categories such as kissing, singing, and unwrapping presents. To make it official, Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Gongora will be on paw to officially pronounce Dachshund Day.
