On May 20, 1902, Cuba won its independence after centuries of Spanish colonization, the Spanish-American War, and U.S. occupation. Though one can argue that people living in the small island nation don’t have much freedom, the Republic of Cuba still celebrates its independence each year in May. Miamians of Cuban descent (and anyone who likes a party with good food and music) still might not be able to visit Havana for the festivities, but PAX (337 SW Eighth St., Miami) is throwing a Cuban Pig-Out that could be the next best thing.
Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, dance to the rhythms of Afro-Cuban funk bank Palo!, drink rum, and eat copious amounts of lechón from food truck CubanCube — which, by the way, serves a slightly modern take on traditional favorites from iconic restaurant Islas Canarias. Calle Ocho’s Azúcar Ice Cream Company will be on hand to send a shiver up your spine, and Sosa Cigars will give away stogies while supplies last (ask for Carlos). Live painting by Emi, prizes, and surprise acts will keep the party going as everyone chants, “¡Viva Cuba!” loudly enough so our neighbors 90 miles south can hear.
