Sure, Sting seems like a peace-promoting star after penning songs like “They Dance Alone,” highlighting abuses under Pinochet in Chile. But bloggers say the Police front-man has been publicly mum too long about Castro in Cuba.
Bloggers United for Cuban Liberty have organized a candlelight vigil at famed Cuban meeting spot, Versailles, 3555 S.W. 8th St., starting at 8:30 tonight to press Sting and the Police to “advocate for human rights at the band’s reported concert” in Havana in advance of the group’s Tuesday show at Dolphin Stadium.
“The world demands that these changes happen. Celebrities have really aligned themselves with Fidel Castro as opposed to against him,” said Henry Louis Gomez, a contributor to Babalu, part of Bloggers United for Cuban Liberty. “We’re not asking him not to play the concert in Cuba. We’re asking him to use it as a platform.”
Gomez, a 37-year-old Miami blogger and a Police fan, said he bought tickets for Tuesday’s concert but after hearing rumblings about a Havana concert date he couldn’t just go and mindlessly bee-bop nostalgically to Police songs. So, he has helped organize the sting against the Police.
Last week, he stayed up into the wee hours to edit this video, soaked with shots of history and present-day footage of the Castro regime and set to the Police tune, “Murder by Numbers” and put it on YouTube. —Janine Zeitlin
