There’s more to Miami than plastic surgery and sterile high-rises. Beneath South Florida’s façade lies a tropical paradise, a treasure trove of natural wonders — many of which are found in the nooks and crannies of the city’s oft-forgotten waterways.
For many Miamians, this aquatic wonderland is a side of the city they’ve never seen. But the Waterway Canoe Tour offers a glimpse of the 305 from an entirely different angle. Seafarers will start their adventure with a tour of the Coral Gables Museum’s “Creating the Dream” exhibit, providing some insight into George E. Merrick’s (the founder of Coral Gables) many exploits.
Then hit the water to explore historic landmarks and viridescent vistas. The tour will traverse the manmade system of canals that added 40 miles of waterfront to the Gables. Lucky canoers will spot some of the area’s more introverted residents, from manatees to tropical birds, a welcome change from Miami’s usual lineup of corrupt politicians and international playboys.
The tour runs from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday — rain or shine — and begins at the Coral Gables Museum (285 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables). Tickets cost $40 per person (ages 6 and older are welcome). Call 305-603-8067 for reservations.
