The border between Mexico and the United States has historically provided a setting for tension in the movies. In his feature debut, Frontera, director Michael Berry adds murder, wrongful accusations against a hard-working illegal (Michael Peña), a pregnant damsel in distress (Eva Longoria), and an ex-sheriff out for revenge (Ed Harris) to make a powder keg ripe for some explosive drama.
But Berry hopes Frontera will be seen as something more than a thriller whose story hinges on plot twists. Expect a film steeped in ambivalence regarding a difficult problem with no easy solutions. Berry says he wanted to present a movie that shows the humanity on both sides of the border. In his director’s statement, Berry says, “Neither my co-writer Juan Luis Moulinet nor I have delusions that there are any obvious solutions to these issues. When Luis and I started talking about making this film, we were both adamant that we did not want to lean the narrative toward one side or the other.”
