We know there’s a percentage of visiting Art Baselites who legitimately are here for art, who care deeply about catching the hottest events so they can lay their hungry eyes on the exhibits right as they open. We’re feeling generous, so we’ll guesstimate that elite group of bona-fide art lovers at 10 percent, 15 tops. The rest of you yobs are here to look cool, be seen, and party like it’s 1999 thanks to any number of open bar/free food events taking place around town. No shame in the free booze game; in this troubled economy, we’re down to slug back every complimentary drop we can get. Art Basel fun officially begins Thursday. Here’s where we suggest you get your drink on.
If art, music, cocktails, and peppermint-flavored cotton candy are your bag, baby, New Times’ very own Magic City Kitty is throwing down an event with beloved local artist LEBO at the Gibson Guitar Studio (180 NE 39th St., Ste. 200, Miami). Stop by from 7 to 11 p.m. — there will be an open bar courtesy of Touch Vodka. RSVP to kitty@miaminewtimes.com.
At the one-night-only gallery event Unscene Miami, emerging local photographers will get a chance to compete and present their work at Set Nightclub (320 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach). And you can roll through to sip Axe Proximity fragrance-inspired cocktails by V Georgio and Rémy Cointreau. Sounds … pungent? Admission is free, but you gotta RSVP at www.944.com/unscene, because space is limited.
We hear Beth Ditto and the rest of hot, hot band The Gossip will be in full effect at O.H.W.O.W. — a.k.a. Our House West of Wynwood (3100 NW Seventh Ave., Miami). Live music, karaoke, video, and, yes, complimentary cocktails will flow from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Visit www.oh-wow.com.
The Scope Art Fair (2951 NE First Ave., Miami) is not to be missed if you’re into inspiring imagery — hello, Friends with You! This year the duo has collaborated with Art Asia to present 88 exhibitors from 22 countries. The grub should be good thanks to Jeremiah and the gang from Bullfrog Eatz. We’ve missed them since their funky, graffiti-covered venue in Wynwood closed a few years ago. Now they’ve teamed up with Scope to provide all the refreshments, and beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday, December 7, Bullfrog will serve brunch to the general public. Visit www.scope-art.com.
