Forget what it says on the marquee — the venue is undoubtedly Amerykahn Airlines Arena when neo-soul queen Erykah Badu is in town. The striking singer, with her beehive headgear and enormous Afro wigs, is touring in support of the freshly released New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh), a gritty R&B collection that trumps her formidable Part One (4th World War) and nearly any album released so far this year.
The new single, “Window Seat,” finds Badu holding her own broken-beautiful voice as confidently as on anything since her 1997 debut, Baduizm. In the brash, NSFW “Window Seat” video, she takes off all of her clothes on the Dallas, Texas street where JFK was assassinated. Elsewhere on the album, she boasts she’s 20 feet tall. No argument here.
Artistically, the past couple of years have been good to Badu, so it’s the right time to reward her by reveling in her greatness in person.

Will you step up to support New Times this year?
At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $18,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
