There’s always been something romantic about the coffeehouse. From American expats and arty cognoscenti in those dark salons of yore, to the respite they have afforded many a young student looking for a first taste of bar culture, the coffeehouse has long been a symbol of untethered, caffeine-fueled discourse. Look no further than any Cuban ventanita in town to see the wild gesticulations of elderly men. Sure, the mass commercialization of coffee culture has killed the mom-and-pop coffeehouse, but it hasn’t snuffed the literary and philosophic spirit of those who enjoy a cup of java and a passionate chat about the human condition.
Sweat Records — a modern salon of sorts — will host the Miami Coffeehouse Discussion Series: Race, where the group will discuss the heady topic of race. From its etymological roots in 17th-century usage to the election of President Barack Obama, this timely topic will benefit from recent examples of race-relations progression (or is it retrogression?) in America. Only way to find out is to join the conversation in the spirit of tackling subjects of humanity in a grassroots, face-to-face manner. Oh, and with a hot cup of coffee.
