Amaluna, the latest Cirque du Soleil spectacular, is one of founder Guy Laliberté’s most ambitious productions yet. Audiences are transported to a mysterious island governed by goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon, which, if you think about it, seems a far better reality than what we have in Washington, D.C., these days. The island’s queen, Prospera, is planning her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony with a sacred rite of passage that honors femininity, renewal, and rebirth. (Think a cross between a quinceañera and a bat mitzvah.) Well, leave it to the guys to muck things up! Prospera’s daughter falls for a young man who was washed ashore in the wake of a storm. That pisses off Prospera, forcing the young lovers to deal with any number of trials and tribulations. Hey, who hasn’t had a rocky relationship? Sans the spectacle, of course.
