Miami Springs is a nice place. Nice in the sense of comfortable (house prices begin at $350K), quiet, verdant. Fishing and yard sales are the prime avocations. And the people are nice, in the sense of being generous. Two prime examples this week: The Miami Springs Optimist Club Charity Dolphin Tournament offers a number of prizes in various categories while raising funds for community projects. The entry fee is $350 per boat (four anglers), and the captains’ meeting is Thursday, June 8, at Hollemans Restaurant (1 Curtiss Pkwy., Miami Springs). Along with cash prizes ranging from $500 to $7500, there are many other awards, including airline tickets, a truck, a cruise, and fishing gear. For details call 305-467-5235 or visit www.vgrec.com/fish. And then there’s the dog park, a community effort located near the corner of North Royal Poinciana Boulevard and Dove Avenue (across from Miami Springs Senior High). From 7:00 a.m. to noon, volunteers will host a yard sale to raise funds to improve the popular gathering place for pooches and their owners. Bring stuff to sell, or money to buy. You can also purchase a brick that will be placed on a walkway. Call Laurie at 786-419-3300.
