“You may have four to five different women in your life, but you’ll only have one [soccer] club,” says a fan in the documentary Argentina Fútbol Club, premiering at the sixth annual Argentinean Film Showcase at M the Miami Dade College Tower Theater (1508 SW Eighth St., Miami). Yup, they take their soccer seriously in the land of gauchos and tasty red meat. While sports rivalries engender passion in the States, games between Argentina’s two most popular soccer teams — Boca Juniors and River Plate — are more Bloods versus Crips than Yankees versus Red Sox, and the documentary explores all aspects of the lunacy surrounding the soccer culture, not the least of which is violence.
But Argentina is more than soccer, and the showcase, which opens this Saturday with a 9 p.m. showing of Dos Hermanos, features some of the best Argentine filmmakers and actors in comedies, dramas, and even an animated children’s flick, Cuentos de la Selva. All films are South Florida premieres and screen at least twice. Besides the soccer documentary, which airs December 1 and 4 at 6:45 p.m., other notable films include Francia, Por Tu Culpa, El Artista, Horizontal/Vertical, and Rodney.
