Head to the New World Center (500 17th St., Miami Beach) for an international dose of high culture when the New World Symphony performs Shostakovich: The Monumental Tenth. The show kicks off with Argentine cellist Sol Gabetta (and her prized cello, which dates back to 1759) making her NWS debut with Edward Elgar’s Concerto in E Minor for Cello and Orchestra, a work from the twilight of the British romantic era. Then, Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado will lead the orchestra in Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, a Russian composition written mere months after the death of Stalin. The program describes the symphony as beginning sincerely, graduating to a musical depiction of Stalin himself in the second movement, and culminating with a heroic and optimistic conclusion, a tracing of Russia’s post-World War II journey.
