Although the original celebration began in Spain and Portugal, the elaborate Carnaval de Barranquilla was brought to Colombia by the Spanish during the mid Eighteenth Century. And over the past five years, Carnaval has found a fresh party ground in Miami. Tonight, inside La Covacha, some of Colombia’s top entertainers and performers, including Silvestre Dangond, Los Hermanos Zuleta, and El Ciclón, will have you dancing nonstop. La Covacha owner Aurelio Rodriguez says the Colombian fiesta always packs the house, some partygoers reminiscing about their homeland, others simply enjoying the vibe. “There’s a big Colombian population here, and this is one of their biggest events,” says Rodriguez, a Cuban American. “There will be a lot of beautiful women, dancing, and it’s just a lot of fun. It’s the closest you can get to the festival without actually going to Colombia.” The colorful costumes will fill the club from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Tickets cost $25 in advance, $40 at the door.
