Teeth-chattering Northerners might be shopping in a 30-degree chill, but ArtCenter/South Florida is decked out for a summer bazaar. Today from 2:00 to 9:00 outside ArtCenter’s 800 Lincoln Rd. gallery, “ArtShop: Pop In, Pop Up, Pop Buy!” offers art lovers and fashionistas an alfresco shopping experience celebrating the seventeenth-annual Art Miami Contemporary Art Fair. The chic outdoor trading post is pitching a curated selection of trendsetting “vacation essentials,” clothing, and accessories from Diego Garcia Authentic Goods. Founded by a pair of shopping chums — Erica Kennedy and Aisha Salmon — Diego Garcia is a traveling trunk show featuring brightly colored tunics, tie-dyed dresses, vintage Levi’s miniskirts, and Mexican market bags. The bargain-cool hunters scour the globe for unusual finds and peddle their wares at private invitation-only sales.
The work of “Gotta Get Up” mixed-media collage artist Jon Tomlinson will also be featured as a blue-light special during the festivities. He uses materials like candy wrappers, cigarette packages, and other recycled stuff to create provocative Afro-centric works in what he calls a “painting with paper” style. The work of ArtCenter’s resident artists will also be available for purchase during the postholiday sale.
