If you haven’t heard of Gilberto Gil, either you’re not Brazilian or you’ve been hiding under a pop-music rock far too long. Gil is one of Brazil’s best-known singer-songwriters. He has performed his signature blend of rock, samba, and reggae around the world and earned stacks of Grammys. Known primarily as a performer of political music, Gil is also a celebrated activist who started out playing simple sambas but soon made his mark singing about environmental issues, militarism, and the politics of life in the larger world.
This Wednesday the Brazilian legend lands at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts with backup from his son Bem on guitar and Jaques Morelenbaum on cello. The 67-year-old Gil and his sidemen will perform an entirely acoustic set of both new and classic tunes.
