The New World School of the Arts is our version of Fame. Earnest, deeply talented youth learn and kvetch and surge through hormonal vortices while perfecting their pirouettes and diaphragmatic breathing and brushstrokes. The talent here, on both the high school and college levels, is formidable. Alumni include Alvin Ailey dancer Amos Machanic; White Oak Dance Project (a.k.a. Mikhail Baryshnikov’s company) dancer Raquel Aedo; choreographer/modern dance phenom Robert Battle (formerly of the scintillating Parsons Dance Company); New World Symphony cellist Aaron Merritt; trumpet supernova Seneca Black; Disney designer Bernard Chang; screenwriter Nicole Snyder; and Tony winner Katie Finneran.
Tonight at 7:30 experience the virtuosity in the student showcase Rising Stars. The classical and neoclassical program features music, choreography, and design by both faculty and guest artists. It’s all happening at the Olympia Theater in the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts. Arrive early to catch the Visual Arts division’s exhibit of student work from 5:00 to 7:00. Ticket prices range from $10 to $30. Call 305-237-3135, or visit www.mdc.edu/nwsa/calendar_performance.asp.
