The first gunshot of World War I bulleted through the air in 1914, yet a hundred years later, we continue to examine it with both fascination and horror. The Wolfsonian-FIU (1001 Washington Ave., Miami Beach) is in fact dedicated to veterans of all wars but was founded specifically to commemorate WWI and its unceasing impact on culture. This year, as part of the museum’s anniversary, it’s taking a close look at WWI’s cultural influence, and it invites you to a special edition of Book Club: In Parenthesis With David Jones.
The author served as an infantryman on the Western Front and draws upon his memories, both beautiful and menacing, for the work published in 1937. According to the Wolfsonian, Jones fuses “poetry and prose, gutter talk and high music, wartime terror and ancient myth” to present “a picture at once panoramic and intimate of a world of interminable waiting and unforeseen death.” Learn from the intimate and personal account, and then stay awhile to take in the humanizing display of the Wolfsonian’s WWI-themed exhibition.
