They say you never forget your first time. So prepare yourself for “Rashid Johnson: Message to Our Folks.” It’s the first major solo exhibition for the New York City-based artist, who’s known for his poignant, complex, and deeply moving assessments of the black experience in America.
Raised in Chicago, Johnson is a photographer first, earning his MFA in the medium in 2005. Since then, he’s expanded his work to include sculpture, painting, and video. His debut solo show at the Miami Art Museum (101 W. Flagler St., Miami) will showcase not only the breadth of his range but also the specificity of his gaze, with pieces that force the viewer to confront the truths and fictions of racial identity, even — and especially — when they contradict.
