Not unlike New York Fashion Week in February and September, Miami Beach hosts its own fashion celebration every summer, showcasing the article of clothing we do best: swimwear. The first-ever Miami Swim Week took place in 1989, and after last year’s hiatus, it has come back with a bang. While events will take place all over the city, the one to catch will be Art Hearts Fashion’s production at the Faena Forum, which kicks off on Thursday. Love comedy but don’t know where to go see it? Described as a “hidden comedy club,” Tripping Animals Brewing Co.’s Comedy Night occurs every Thursday. The event is presented by Miami Comedy, which hosts other comedy nights around town, including Tuesdays at Sweet Caroline and Fridays at FunDimenision. If beer and jokes aren’t a good enough pairing for you, there’s also barbecue fare from Gorilla City Meats and Sandwiches. New York producers DJ Swisha and Kush Jones make their Miami debut at ATV Records on Thursday thanks to local label and collective Jezebel Sounds. Both artists draw from Footwork and Baltimore club styles, which will makefor a night of energetic East Coast underground musings. Premiering Friday at Tower Theater, I Carry You With Me (Te Llevo Conmigo) focuses on a love story between an aspiring chef (Armando Espitia) and a teacher (Christian Vázquez) that begins in Mexico and makes its way to New York City. The film had its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the NEXT Innovator and Audience Awards. No stranger to spinning at the biggest clubs in the world, Alesso brings his sound-selection mastery to Story on Friday. The Grammy-nominated producer rose to fame at the height of the EDM craze in the early 2010s thanks to tracks like the Calvin Harris collaboration “Under Control” and “Heroes (We Could Be),” featuring Tove Lo. Local rock outfit Better Strangers is set to play at Gramps on Saturday. The band consists of guitarist Joey Rodriguez, bassist Yang Waingarten, drummer Nic Collins, and singer deCasa, who joined in 2020. Aiming to “make rock relevant again,” Better Strangers released their debut EP, Luna’s Daydream, back in April. How familiar are you with Haitian culture? On Sunday, HistoryMiami teams up with the Little Haiti Cultural Center for a day of Haitian Food and Folktales. Storyteller Ketsia Theodore-Pharel will lead the event, sharing stories and other folktales while guiding participants in the preparation of Haitian dumpling soup. The Museum of Graffiti has expanded with its newly opened outpost inside the Confidante Miami Beach. Dubbed Museum of Graffiti Beachside, the nine-month pop-up currently features the work of Cuban-American artist Jel Martinez, which will be on display until August 15. Expect artists like Ahol Sniffs Glue and Few and Far, the all-female graffiti-street art crew, to be featured as well through the pop-up’s run.
