ENTER: You — a young, up-and-coming, dreamy-eyed Miami writer with an idea for a novel, something hip and grandiose. It’ll capture the voice and culture of your generation. The idea in your head’s big. Real big. It’ll shake foundations. Rattle the establishment. Who knows? Maybe it’ll change the world. There’s only one problem, you don’t know how to write a scene, let alone a novel. It’s hopeless. You’ve taken a class, but the teacher kept saying the same damn thing: Show, don’t tell. You don’t really know what that means. You sigh and choke on your frustration.
ENTER: Nicholas Garnett, a friendly local writing instructor. He’s all charged up and ready to go, fully loaded with an MFA, tricks of the trade, and a brand new workshop on how to start a literary scene. Starting this Monday at 6:30 p.m., at Miami Dade College’s Florida Center for the Literary Arts, Garnett will break down all that show-don’t-tell advice through an eight week course, Making the Scene.
