Hats are an underrated fashion accessory. Other than by the likes of Kate Middleton and Pharrell, they’re generally overlooked — much to the detriment of our collective style.
But that all changes once a year at Coconut Grove’s Mad Hatter Arts Festival. Now in its tenth incarnation, this juried art event showcases outstanding works in a whole host of mediums — and the zaniest hats this side of Wonderland. Participating artists include metal sculptor Lugufelo, painter and watercolorist Eileen Seitz, pop artist Ed King, and stained-glass creators Alan & Lisa Glover, among many others.
Expect chalk street painting in the theme Through the Looking Glass, a Saturday-night under-the-stars screening of the original Alice in Wonderland, live music, a participatory drum circle, a DJ, hat contests, and lots of kids’ activities. Basically, it’s an art extravaganza as colorful as Lewis Carroll’s imagination.
So get working on Kentucky Derby-worthy headgear.
The festival runs Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Barnacle State Historic Park (3485 Main Hwy., Coconut Grove) and along the rest of Main Highway. The festival is free, but admission to the Barnacle costs $2. The Alice in Wonderland film screening begins at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Barnacle, and tickets cost $5 for ages 6 and up.
