The Magic City has produced its fair share of brag-worthy success stories. Though some of our shallower residents are apt to toss out the names of baseball players and reality-TV stars, locals with finer sensibilities tend to brag about our artists. And though Carl Hiaasen is best-known as a genre writer for his bestselling mystery novels, there’s no doubt he is truly an artiste. The London Observer called him “America’s finest satirical novelist,” and the famed Janet Maslin of the New York Times compared Hiaasen to Woody Allen and Preston Sturges.
Of course, Hiaasen is more than just an author of mysteries. He’s also a journalist who’s been writing for the Miami Herald for decades and whose nonfiction work has also appeared in Sports Illustrated, Playboy, Time, Life, Esquire, and Gourmet. With decades of covering Miami crime, he has seemingly endless material for his books; the man has pretty much seen it all.
