The Miami Heat has some deep-seated issues when it comes to the Dallas Mavericks. Meeting in the NBA Finals twice in four years, both have played spoiler to the other, with arguably the lesser team winning each time. Oddly, the team that wins usually goes on to implode its roster to begin rebuilding. After 2006, the Heat made moves that led to signing “the Three Kings”; this year, the Dallas Mavericks find themselves with a roster of new faces.
This past offseason, the Mavs let go of key players Jason Terry and Jason Kidd, only to sign the team’s newest star, O.J. Mayo from Memphis. He has been a revelation for the Mavs, keeping them afloat at a .500 record, while superstar Dirk Nowitzki has spent the year on the injury list while recovering from knee surgery.
As for the Heat, it’s been business as usual, except that the team’s post-championship malaise is becoming a bit too apparent. Maybe that old resentment can rise up Wednesday at the American Airlines Arena (601 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) and snap the boys out of their funk.
