Close your eyes and imagine a world where you can see sounds and hear colors, where primal drumbeats leap off the works of Picasso and Brancusi. In a world where you could sense improvisational jazz riffs arranged in a cubist masterpiece, you might also experience the plaintive wail of a trumpet in the sensuously swaying dance of a sleek Calder mobile. This Wednesday at 8 p.m., the Frost Art Museum will unveil its Target Wednesday After Hours series, featuring velvet-voiced chanteuse Nicole Henry, accompanied by associate professor of jazz performance Mike Orta and FIU music students.
Henry, who will perform songs from her recent CD, At Last, will join Orta in a free-flowing Q&A jam session with the audience, discussing jazz music, improvisation, and the connections between the visual and performing arts. One of the high notes will be guided gallery tours of the new museum’s debut exhibitions, including “Modern Masters from the Smithsonian.” Target has teamed up with the Frost to sponsor the museum’s popular educational series, offering visitors the chance to engage with a broad medley of art, live music, talks, films, dance performances, poetry slams, and performance art. The events are free and open to the public.
