Some are calling Street Sense’s brilliant Kentucky Derby run a resurrection for a sport. Yeah, we said the “s” word. Horse racing, unlike Lotto, slots, and Indian gaming, is, in fact, a sport — that’s been dying for a generation. Tomorrow’s Preakness and today’s Black-Eyed Susan, the second jewel of the Triple Crown for fillies (both of which take place at Pimlico in Baltimore), should only add to the cachet. Calder Race Course will simulcast the high-stakes happenings at Pim today and tomorrow.
There will also be a live race card for true sportsmen and sportswomen. But c’mon, simulcasting, which makes every track a race book/OTB parlor, helps keep our courses alive while providing everyone with an easy (and legal) way to get some action down on big, and not so big, races. The Susan, named for Maryland’s state flower, along with four other stakes races on that card, helps shine a light on the often dissed distaff T-breds. Go, girls!
