Even if you don’t know much about American classical music, you’ve almost certainly heard Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man. It has been featured everywhere from the Olympics to the soundtrack to He Got Game. Yet it’s only one of many masterpieces created by “the dean of American composers.” Tonight the New World Symphony will perform three of Copland’s works (including Fanfare), as well as Violin Concerto by William Schuman, the American composer who won the first Pulitzer Prize for Music. As if that weren’t enough, Grammy Award-winning violinist Gil Shaham will be joining the symphony for the event.
The concert, American Voices: Orchestral Music, will be led by New World Symphony founder Michael Tilson Thomas and conducting fellow Florin Parvulescu. It begins at 8:00 at the Lincoln Theatre Sunday’s performance begins at 3:00.
