The international acrobatic dance troupe Pilobolus has been a huge crowd pleaser in Miami. When they return to the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) this Friday and Saturday, they’ll bring five new performances, just in case you think you’ve seen it all before.
The choreography plays with anthropomorphic illusions; the dancers become entwined, move as one creature, separate, and then become individual trapeze artists. They are literally and thematically all over the place. For instance, one of the pieces that’s premiering, “The Transformation,” is a collaboration with the writer of SpongeBob SquarePants; another, “Licks,” was created with the masters of trickery, Penn & Teller, and features 12 ropes, six dancers, and the music of the Mexican electronica group Nortec Collective.
Despite all the onstage spectacle and eye-popping athleticism, Pilobolus is still, at its essence, a dance troupe, with tight choreography and precise movement. The performances might have a wild feel, but they are smoothly produced.
