Boy meets girl, boy marries girl, boy beats the pulp out of girl, everyone wonders what to do next. This is where A Lie of the Mind, a 1980s off-Broadway play by Sam Shepard, begins — with a husband and wife and their dysfunctional and distraught families dealing with the aftereffects of his severe spousal abuse. The wife lives but is now mentally disabled. The relatives, who themselves are the worst of the worst, battle across the stage, oblivious to their own violently destructive behaviors, and take revenge. Directed by Wayne E. Robinson Jr., the intense drama is suspenseful, violent, and gripping.
