6. Wendy Wischer 
Wendy Wischer considers herself someone who has always made art. Wischer explains, “I have come to realize that there is nothing else I can do. Suceed or fail, I make art.” Interested in exploring boundaries, both conceptually and visually, her work is most recognized for its introspective take on fusing nature with technology.

Working with sculptural objects, installations,

video, photography, and digital media, the artist has a particular

interest in the way environments work and transforming them. “I explore

the diverse realm between the physical and the imaginary, sensual and

virtual existence. With a concentration on environments, my interests in

light lies in the fluidity of the medium,” claims Wischer. 

With

light being a main inspiration behind her work, Wischer states: “It is

both tangible and intangible at the same time. Light is performance by

nature yet when projected on a flat surface it becomes a two dimensional

image.” One of her more laborious sculptures, Incandescence,

incorporates coated Styrofoam, thousands of mirror tiles, and light

reflected throughout the room.

The play between technology and nature in

her work is also attributed to the influence that rural and urban

environments provide. Wischer has lived in both settings, and as a

result, aspires to direct awareness to the smaller things in life or as

she puts it, “the sacred within the mundane and the monumental within

the minute.” But environment isn’t the only element playing a large role

in her work. Deeply personal undertones stream through Wischer’s work

and allow her to exhibit aesthetically complex work created with a

minimal approach. 

Speaking of the art community in her city Wischer says, “I

think the Miami art scene is special because of the diversity of artists

and the diverse backgrounds they bring to the community.” She will

continue to show in prominent shows this year, adding to her already

large roster of exhibitions and awards. Wischer’s work can be viewed on

I will be exhibiting in the Florence Biennale at the end of this year.

I am unexplainably compelled to make things.

I miss it when I’m not there.
