Miami’s most sought-after (and most award-winning) pizza slice is heading south. Miami Slice, winner of New Times‘ Best Pizza 2024, is planning to open a new location in Coconut Grove, taking over the former Harry’s Pizzeria space at 2996 McFarlane Rd. Ownership has confirmed the expansion, but is keeping other details close to the vest – for now, anyway.

Two unique and popular pies are the “Leeks on Bacon,” a garlic confit cream base loaded with mozzarella, leeks, and smoky bacon, and the “Mushroom Truffle,” made with a truffle cream and mushrooms.

The Slice Following

Miami Slice began quietly in 2019 as a pop-up inside La Latina’s kitchen in Midtown, and quickly drew attention for its technique-driven dough and late-night crowds. By 2022, it had settled into its current downtown Miami space at 1335 NE Miami Ct., a narrow, 15-seat counter where walk-ins often form lines before the doors open.

Dining there is straightforward. There are five slices, one or two rotating desserts, and a short list of beer, wine, and soft drinks. The small menu has become a point of pride, keeping focus on the details that make each pizza stand out.

The “Margherita de la Casa” keeps it classic with red sauce, mozzarella, and basil. The “Pepperoni Proper” is a favorite with cupped pepperoni and a drizzle of hot honey. The Instagram-famous “La Salsera” combines red and vodka sauces with pesto, tying it all together. Then there’s “Leeks on Bacon,” a garlic confit cream base loaded with mozzarella, leeks, and smoky bacon, and the “Mushroom Truffle,” made with a truffle cream and mushrooms. And don’t forget the “Kicks and Dips” that make each slice customizable. Think options like stracciatella, hot honey, red sauce dip, and the three-cheese version.

Pies bake twice at high heat, giving each slice its caramelized bottom and the slight chew that’s become the brand’s signature.

The dough begins with a lengthy pre-fermentation that rests for hours before undergoing a long, cold fermentation. The result is a crust that’s light, crisp, and flavorful without being brittle. Pies bake twice at high heat, giving each slice its caramelized bottom and the slight chew that’s become the brand’s signature. The process sounds technical because it is, but it’s that precision that separates Miami Slice from the city’s many pizza newcomers.

It’s a small operation, but one with growing influence. The restaurant’s authentic approach to its dough and its “no-flop” crust earned it national attention, including a spot near the top of 50 Top Pizza’s list of best slices in the U.S. and New Times’ own nod for Best Pizza of 2024. Plus, it’s one of New Times‘ 13 Best Restaurants in Downtown Miami.

Beyond Downtown

This year, Miami Slice tested its reach with a pop-up at Flour & Weirdoughs in Key Biscayne, which runs Wednesday through Sunday evenings. The setup mirrors the downtown format: five slices, counter service, no reservations. The team also expanded to the national stage with a location inside Fontainebleau Las Vegas, serving a similar menu to crowds on the Strip.

The move to Coconut Grove marks Miami Slice’s first permanent expansion within Miami. The new space, formerly home to Harry’s Pizzeria, is larger than the original downtown counter, which could allow the team to serve more guests and ease the nightly wait.
